چکیده

We present a novel algorithm for light source estimation in scenes reconstructed with a RGB-D camera based on an analytically-derived formulation of path-tracing. Our algorithm traces the reconstructed scene with a custom pathtracer and computes the analytical derivatives of the light transport equation from principles in optics. These derivatives are then used to perform gradient descent, minimizing the photometric error between one or more captured reference images and renders of our current lighting estimation using an environment map parameterization for light sources. We show that our approach of modeling all light sources as points at infinity approximates lights located near the scene with surprising accuracy. Due to the analytical formulation of derivatives, optimization to the solution is considerably accelerated. We verify our algorithm using both real and synthetic data.

Multiple Vertex Next Event Estimation for Lighting in dense, forward-scattering Media

We present a new technique called Multiple Vertex Next Event Estimation, which outperforms current direct lighting techniques in forward scattering, optically dense media with the Henyey-Greenstein phase function. Instead of a one-segment connection from a vertex within the medium to the light source, an entire sub path of arbitrary length can be created and we show experimentally that 4-10 seg...

Subdivision Next-Event Estimation for Path-Traced Subsurface Scattering

We present subdivision next-event estimation (SNEE) for unbiased Monte Carlo simulation of subsurface scattering. Our technique is designed to sample high frequency illumination through geometrically complex interfaces with highly directional scattering lobes enclosing a scattering medium. This case is difficult to sample and a common source of image noise. We explore the idea of exploiting the...

Gradient-Domain Photon Density Estimation

The most common solutions to the light transport problem rely on either Monte Carlo (MC) integration or density estimation methods, such as uni& bi-directional path tracing or photon mapping. Recent gradient-domain extensions of MC approaches show great promise; here, gradients of the final image are estimated numerically (instead of the image intensities themselves) with coherent paths generat...

Historical Introduction to Photon Differential Splatting

This document provides a historical overview of the development in computer graphics that led to photon differential splatting. We highlight how photon differential splatting differs from this early related work. 1. Early Related Work It seems that a two-pass method for rendering caustics, where a tracing from the light sources is added to a tracing from the eye, was first suggested by Heckbert...

A Survey of Radiosity and Ray-tracing Methods in Global Illumination

This paper surveys Radiosity and Ray-tracing methods used in global illumination. Global illumination is based on light transport mechanism in real world. The light transport mechanism can be expressed in terms of BRDF of each element, and the most common and practical way is dividing the BRDF into specular and diffuse component. Mathematically Global illumination is a problem of solving numeri...
